MURAL DECORATION COURSES & DETAILS
We currently run one in-person Mural Decoration course that we teach in our studio near Anghiari; Mural Decoration Painting, Architectural Illusion or Trompe l’Oeil. This course is taught by Alison Woolley. Alison is a a master artisan recognised by the region of Tuscany. She has over 20 years experience teaching decorative arts and she specialises in hand painted decoration using traditional media.

Accommodation
There are many hotels, apartments and agriturismo options for your stay in Tuscany. The studio is located in the picturesque setting of the Santuario del Carmine near Anghiari. You will need a car to get there, or ask us about bus or taxi services from Arezzo train station. Pick up and drop off within a 5km radius of the studio is available upon request. Please contact us if you would like recommendations on where to stay during your course.
Durations
Courses are usually held over three to five days. Particular durations will be stated once a course is scheduled. Class times are from 9am to 2pm unless otherwise stated. Free studio time is available in the afternoons.

MURAL DECORATION PAINTING, ARCHITECTURAL ILLUSION OR TROMPE L’OEIL
Learn time-tested techniques for mural decoration passed down through generations of Italian artisans.
Course description:
Painting Architectural Illusion or Trompe L'Oeil (Linear striping)
Learn basic techniques of the ancient art of creating splendid architectural illusions. Known as 'quadraturismo' this art reached its height in the baroque period in Italy. This basic course covers learning the correct use of specific tools of the trade such as the lining ruler and the correct brushes. Students study how to create linear divisions of shading to create the illusion of a three dimensional frame, how to construct a composition, the use of chiaroscuro, and the creation of linear architectural elements in trompe l'oeil relief.
Painting Architectural Illusion or Trompe L'Oeil (Ornament)
This is the second level of study on the art of 'quadraturismo'. Students study and make examples of the most frequently used decorative elements. Learn how to draw and how to employ them in mural decoration. Techniques for executing non-linear decorative elements are covered.
Mural Painting: Scenic Elements - Landscape, Floral and Imitation of Stone and Marble for Murals
Course description:
This course introduces systems of working with colourful and stylish elements which add life and interest to the more rigorous formal elements of chiaroscuro work. It is useful for people who wish to have a well rounded study of all the elements of mural and decorative panel painting.
Course objectives:
Learn to master the free form elements of a mural composition such as faux marble, landscape, floral and leafy elements, and the imitation of surface textures.
This course covers:
• mixing and using an harmonious colour palette
• brushstroke work and shading
• imitation of stone and marble
• finishes and patinas (‘antiqued’ surfaces)
• the composition of a landscape with the construction of foreground, middle and background using colour and value to create atmospheric perspective
Course level:
All levels are welcome on this course. Teaching is in English or Italian. The group size is limited to a maximum of 4 participants per course.
