Course description:
Students will create a hand painted sample on a small wooden board, (25cm x30 cm circa). We will cover the techniques for preparing and base coating furniture with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, and how to mix a limited color palette that works harmoniously. Examples of adapting designs for furniture, making delicious color palettes from fabric swatches, and composing ornament will be discussed. Students will learn techniques for creating effective shadow and line work with surprisingly few colors and brushstrokes. Water based casein paints will be used for the hand painted ornament. Furniture finishing, waxing and patinas will be covered.

Shiva casein paints from Jack Richeson and Co. are used to execute the hand painted decoration. These paints are ideal for one-stroke decorative work because they are smooth, flowing and very opaque. The natural binder, casein, makes it easy to achieve a soft antique effect. Shiva paints come in a full artist's palette range of colours.
